姜昕


姜昕 (Jiang Xin / Jessica Jiang) is a Chinese singer/songwriter. The daughter of a doctor, she was a good student, and was admitted to the Beijing Institute of Economics, but in her second year she met some of China's premier rock musicians, including 张矩 (Zhang Ju) and 窦唯 (Dou Wei), and dropped out of school to pursue singing, at first in bars. Her first album, 花开不败 (The Tenacious Flower), came out in 1995, and won several awards, though it did not fare well commercially, perhaps due to the personal nature of the music, and the fact that her low, husky voice is so different from most popular Chinese pop singers. She wrote lyrics for three of the tracks on the album, which is now regarded as one of China's best alternative/rock records of the 90s. Her second album (五月 / May) did not appear until 2001, and all of its lyrics were penned by Jiang herself with musical collaboration from such well-known figures as 祝晓民 (Zhu Xiaomin), 许巍 (Xu Wei) and 童孔等 (Tang Kongdeng). Also in 2001, she wrote a novel called 长发飞扬的日子 (Days of Long Hair Flying). Her third album, 纯粹 (Purity), was produced by Xu Wei in 2003, featuring an all-star lineup of Chinese musicians. Its single Pandora did well in the charts, and she garnered more awards, including Best Rock Album.
