Akira Ishikawa (1934 - 2002) was a prominent Japanese drummer. After visiting East Africa in 1970, he became known for incorporating many African elements into his jazz. For many years, he led a band called Count Buffalos, which was spelled differently for nearly every album. Even on the Japanese releases of his albums, the English form of the name was used. He also did some work in soundtracks for TV and movies, along with session work. Later in life, he relocated to Kenya, and lived there until his death in 2002.
