Anakhi


Surjit Anakhi was born and raised in Walsall. Wanting to follow his passion at the age of 12 gave him the courage to sing in front of the congregation at his local Gudwara. At the age of 16, he started to follow his ambition of music by, joining a group named ekta. There he played congos and drums under the influence of reaching his goal. He travelled most parts of England performing for mainly weddings and special occasions. During his time in ekta he started to understand the principles of singing. 6 months into ekta he started singing bolliyan for a Punjabi folk dance group named diwnans. They entered world wide competitions such as eistedford in Llangollen, Wales. They performed in one of the wonders of the world, Royal Albert Hall. They carried out a typical folk dance with Surjit Anakhi singing in front. This was one of the milestones of his career. Whilst with diwnans Surjit Anakhi was being taught by professor Amar Singh and then later learned from the great late Ustad Jaswant Singh Bhambra. He left ekta and diwnans to take up a vacant post as a joint lead singer in a band called Tafaaq. Where he did weddings and many other occasions. Anakhi wanted to leave this band after 1 year wanting to start his won band named Anakhi. Anakhi was formed in 1991. In 1992 march 11th Anakhi’s first EP track was released.
