Gayathri

Gayathri (full name Gayathri Krishnan, born May 1 1985) is a Dubai-based musician of Indian origin whose works combine rich, soulful vocals, mournful lyricism, lush acoustics and, sometimes, electronic experimentation. She is inspired by, and can be likened to, Regina Spektor, Beth Rowley and Björk. Having grown up in a musical family, an interest in music was almost inevitable. But it wasn't until she began a university degree at 17 that she discovered the full range of musical expression available. There she drew inspiration from blues, jazz and Western indie and alternative genes. But it wasn't until she came home and began to explore Indian classical music that she found her musical voice, bringing together nuances and subtleties from India melodic focu from the west. She has also contributed to the soundtrack of City Of Life, the first film to be entirely produced in the United Arab Emirates, and worked with other Dubai musicians, most recently the rapper Young Vaughn and other artists in the Dubai hip hop collective The Recipe. Her first EP, Disengage , was released in March 2009 on Easy Moon . It features a mixture of experimental electronica tracks ('Disengage') and acoustic songs that draw on both Western and Indian musical cues ('Anbe'). It is available to listen to in full on last.fm. Her official MySpace is myspace.com/gaya3music. Read more on Last.fm. User-contributed text is available under the Creative Commons By-SA License; additional terms may apply.
