Gwinko


Gwinko (金城 吟子/Kanagushiku Ginko, also 美良樹 吟呼/Mirai Gwinko, born on June 4, 1973, in Okinawa) is a Japanese singer from Okinawa who was active from 1987–1994 (solo). She restarted her activities in 2020 as a member of KINA&GWINKO WORLDCHAMPLOO (together with Shokichi Kina). Early life She was one of the very first students at the renowned Okinawa Actors School, an institution that later became a major incubator for talent in Okinawa. In 1986 she passed an audition held by CBS Sony, moved to Tokyo and became the school’s first graduate to make a major-label debut. Musical debut and stylistic identity Her debut single, “Star Ship (I’m Going High)”, was released on September 2 1987 under CBS Sony. Her early work featured a blend of J-pop with R&B, funk and dance-pop influences—an approach less common in the Japanese idol / pop scene of the late 1980s. Reviewers note her “slightly husky and relaxed vocals” and dance choreography metaphorically compared to Janet Jackson.
