Ikki


There are obviously two bands wich are both called 'IKKI' : 1. A jazz band 2. An electronic artist 3. French hardcore punk band. 1. The jazz band IKKI, the name of the band, has double meaning. In Dutch, it’s an abbreviation from Internationaal Kook en Kunst Instituut. Because Matsumoto ‘Santi’ Kazushi, the founder, composer, arranger and bass trombone player, believes cooking and making music have no difference in method, while eating and playing music should be the same as a truly convivial and intercultural moment. Any discriminative prejudice or mere exoticism keeps them away from enjoying their real taste. In Japanese, ikki means spiritual unity, demonstration and riot based on equal membership and autonomy of the people in medieval-early modern Japan. They had been so strong as they could compete the feudal samurai domains. This memory, together with the western idea of human rights, has inspired people to insist grass-root democracy against their absolutist/authoritarian government. IKKI, firm unity of 7 musicians from Austria, Germany, Israel, Japan and The Netherlands, aims to recall such spirits that jazz music has forgotten for a long time, to create powerjazz, a new form of spontaneous soul music. It is inspired by such great musicians as Carla Bley, Gil Evans, James Brown, Shibusashirazu Orchestra, Kip Hanrahan and Art Ensemble of Chicago.
