There are at least four bands called Illicit: A dutch Hip Hop band, a New Zealand rock band, an Australian Metalcore band, a peruvian psychedelic band and a Welsh melodic hardcore band. 1. Dutch Hip Hop Band Illicit: ILLICIT hip hop. It’s a free spirited and versatile combination of tight instrumentalism & visionary wordplay. The five boys (Bram Hakkens on Drums, Freek Cerutti on bass guitar, Pieter de Graaf on keys, Principle on guitar & ParAdoX on the mic) from Utrecht, Netherlands have finally been signed, sealed and delivered. Since 2002, Their soulful tunes already entered countless bedrooms and their raw beats already shook many venues and festivals (for instance North Sea Jazz & Brussels Jazzmarathon). But now, the first official ILLICIT record is here. Cheap Propaganda is a schizophrenic piece of work. The compositions and lyrics remind one of The Roots, Common or Outkast at one point and of Prince and Sly Stone at the next. Drums, Bass, keys, guitar and raps have been entwining for four years now. And it’s about time sound systems around the world got a taste of it all. Blessed with some guest scratching by DJ Sjam and some guest rhyming by renowned comrade Atactic and legendary Dutch old school crew The Proov, Cheap Propaganda can be described as either a simple experiment or a complex journey, whichever way you’d like to put it, as long as you put it on your top shelf.
