Kiva


There are four (and probably more) artists with the same name, Kiva. 1) A Canadian overtone singer/ keyboardist, based in Prague. Also known as Kiva Simova. Kiva specializes in overtone singing. Her music is otherworldly world beat/ folk/ nu-jazz with lots of global rhythmic grooves, invoking Bobby McFerrin, Jane Siberry, Lisa Gerrard. She directs her own experimental overtone choir, AURALIA in Prague, and has two solo CDs 'The Ladder' ('98) and 'Pulse' ('05). She has appeared as a guest improvisational vocalist with Tanya Tagaq, Yellow Sisters, Jennifer Berezan, Olla Vogala orchestra, among others, and film soundtracks. She comes from a background of classical and jazz piano, with experience in numerous genres and bands, including a stint as tour member with the Crash Test Dummies in '94-'95. 2) An Improvised research/performance group formed by trombonist John Silber and the French percussionist Jean-Charles François. The research/performance group KIVA was created in 1975 by the American trombonist John Silber and the French percussionist Jean-Charles François as part of a research project at the Center for Music Experiment at the University of California San Diego. During the period of its existence (1975-91) various members (often graduate students from UCSD) joined the two permanent musicians, John Silber and Jean-Charles François, to contribute to the group’s artistic production.
