Makiza

Makiza were a Chilean hip-hop group, formed by Anita Tijoux, Seo2, DJ Squat and Cenzi. Formed back in 1997, when DJ Squat, Cenzi and Seo2, members of Demosapiens Crew, meet Anita and decide to create a band. The name Makiza comes from the French word maquisard, which means 'Maqui Warrior' (a Maqui is a Chilean evergreen shrub bearing edible purple berries). The band debuted with the album Vida Salvaje in 1998. It was later remastered in 2004. Their second album, Aerolíneas Makiza, was released the following year to critical acclaim. The album spawned the hit single La Rosa de los Vientos. Chilean edition of Rolling Stone ranked it the 34th greatest Chilean album of all time. The band appeared on the Los Prisioneros tribute album in 2000 with the cover version of Latinoamérica Es un Pueblo Al Sur de Estados Unidos. After that, the bandmates went separate ways. Anita and Squat went to France, while Seo2 and Cenzi formed Némesis. In March 2004 Anita and Seo2 attempted the reunion of Makiza with two new members, Sonido Ácido and DJ Nakedeye. The band's third and final album, Casino Royale, was released in 2005. In 2006 the band contributed to the Los Jaivas tribute album with their version of ¿Dónde Estabas Tú?. Later, in September 2006, Seo2 announced his departure from Makiza, citing personal motives. Read more on Last.fm.
