Marxman
Marxman were a Marxist hip-hop group with two MCs. Their lyrics expounded socialism and an end to economic and social injustice. Their first single, Sad Affair, caused particular controversy for calling for support for the Republican campaign in Northern Ireland. The band was signed to Talkin' Loud/Polygram and A&M in the United States. Amongst their achievements the band performed their single All About Eve, a song portraying a tragic story of spousal abuse, on the BBC TV's popular music programme Top of the Pops. Their second single, Ship Ahoy guested the evocative vocals of Sinéad O'Connor, in a song depicting parallels between the African slave trade, the colonization of Ireland by England, and present day wage-slavery. Their ability to express intelligent social commentary via a unique musical blend led to their touring with U2 and Depeche Mode on their respective tours, Zooropa and Songs of Faith and Devotion. The band, created in London (1989), was made up of college friends and hip-hop enthusiasts from Bristol MC's Hollis Byrne (H) and Stephen Brown (MC Phrase). Responsible for the band's concept and development, they dared to air an overtly political voice in a time dominated by Gangsta rap and political apathy. Hollis' childhood friend from Ireland, Oisin Lunny, was enrolled as the band's official third member. DJ K One completed the Marxman line-up as the band's scratch mixer.
