Meitz

Born 1974 in a small town close to Hamburg, Volker Meitz received his first piano lessons at the age of eight, switching on to Jazz piano later and soon getting into his first band, playing and writing funk and soul tunes. In 1995 Volker moved to Berlin and before long got into the local music and soon found himself touring with one of the first German live Drum’n’Bass sound systems Analogue Freestyle. At Delicious Doughnuts, a hip spot back then, Volker eventually hooked up with Jazzanova, who were just about to start the label- and creative pool Sonarkollektiv. He contributed a tune to the Delicious Doughnuts“ Compilation Vol. 2, his first serious production ever. Volker then formed his own project, giving it his family name - Meitz. In 1999 the Africa EP was released on Sonarkollektiv. The title track (Mayibuye I) Africa still is Meitz‘ most successful track to date and has been licensed to over 20 samplers worldwide. A big part in this has South African singer Vido Jelashe, who performed on the tune and has been working together with Meitz ever since. 2001 saw the release of the Get On Up / Mandelbrot 12, featuring Soul/R’n’B-singer Esther Cowens. Meitz also started to get in demand as remixer. He did the well-known 80‘s boogie version of Outta Space for in-house act Daniel Paul as well as works for Kruder & Dorfmeister’s side project Peace Orchestra, Japan based Chari Chari, and lately for a piece of the Brazilian movie soundtrack City Of God.
