Pthalo


In April of 2003, and discouraged with the direction the local music scene seemed to be heading in New Haven, a group of Connecticut musicians set out to work a new approach. With former members of Quadraphonic, Stub Pullman, Sterves of Neil, and Hyperdrop - the musicians in Pthalo formed a bond and created a common musical vision: to provoke a mood, a sensation and an impression through performance and sound. Pthalo fashions this vision through crushing, yet submissive guitars, stabbing keyboard moans, the mechanical harmony of drums, and straightforward yet commanding bass lines. Pthalo's members have graced the stage with Fountains of Wayne, King's X, Rival Schools, Grand Theft Audio, and They Might Be Giants. With both a heavy yet subdued sound, Pthalo's music seems to cross musical boundaries while still paying homage to their contemporaries and influences: Grandaddy, Helmet, Faith No More, Weezer. Pthalo members Mike Conlin and Christopher Scheidel have also participated in co-write collaborations with producer and guitarist Page Hamilton of Helmet, resulting in contributed tracks to the album Size Matters. Pthalo finished their self-released full length, simply titled Pthalo in November of 2003. The songs on this record have demonstrated their diversity by landing them spots both in extreme sports videos all the way to dark independent film productions.
