Vesuveo wrote the song after reading an article in The Nation magazine entitled Katrina's Hidden Race War that exposed unsolved race-based crimes in the Algiers Point neighborhood of New Orleans after the floods, which have yet to bring a conviction. A native New Yorker of Italian American heritage, Vesuveo rose up through the Los Angeles underground hip hop community and burst on the scene in the late 90s with his critically acclaimed groups Moonshine and The Anonymous whose Top 10 hit Green and Gold featuring Eminem remains an underground classic. His artist credits include collaborations with Cut Chemist, Mystic, Medusa, Northern State, Divine Styler, DJ Drez, and Dilated Peoples while he's shared the stage with Black Eyed Peas, KRS-One, Biz Markie, and Rock Steady Crew.
